I spent the whole of last week in school, well…not that kind of school but a short course on Microsoft servers. 6419B, to be exact, which was on “Configuring, Managing and Maintaining Windows Server 2008 based Servers”. The course was facilitated by Daltron who had brought in a certified instructor, Ryan Leuterio Gaduan, from the Philippines

This was the first time I have attended a course on my line of work since I was employed in 2007. Yikes! It took that long!? Anyway, I found it easier that I had actually anticipated.

The course consisted of 14 modules and covered everything you need to know about Windows Server 2008. The lessons were basically lectures on each module followed by 70% of the time devoted to lab exercise (practical) which the other students also enjoyed. Too much theory sucks!

The course also focused primarily on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Our batch was small, only seven in total, and we came from different organizations. Three of us came from government organizations while the rest came from the private industry. Hilary Warika, Eruel William and I came from public service. Hilary from Customs, Eruel from Office of Worker’s Compensation (OWC) and yours truly from the Office of Higher Education (OHE).

The others, Yawing Babul from Daltron, Rolland Basi from Hargy Oil Palm, Heather Lewalewa from Morobe Joint Venture and the only female in the class and finally Emong William from RD Tuna Canners Ltd. It was quite an interesting mix with our age ranging from 25 to 40.

Although the first day started with a slight hiccup, the course went well. The first day was only lectures even though we were supposed to do lab work. This problem arose from the fact that our facilitators had installed 32 bit machines when we needed 64 bit computers to run Windows Server 2008 R2. That problem was fixed by the afternoon and the next day progressed as our instructor had planned.

I now have my eyes set on attending 6425 – Configuring & Troubleshooting Server 2008 Active Directory Service, after which I am planning to, sit for the 70-640 Exam.
