Papua New Guinea’s taekwondo team has bagged nine medals in the individual events yesterday. This came after a disappointing first day of competition.
The team’s coach and former South Pacific taekwondo champion Edward Kassman was not too happy with their performance but was proud of the courage and strength they had shown. He says 95% of the fighters had no international exposure which was a disadvantage but one fighter did manage to impress him. Essau Hemmison in men’s 68kg division won two of his opening matches with knockouts.
Kassman says that Hemmison lacks technique but it was alright because he resides in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville and it was hard to go there and conduct proper clinics to help develop their skills.
2008 PNG Olympian Theresa Tona got silver in the women’s 49kg division.
The team events will be held on Friday.
