The upcoming PNG All Styles – Golden Kicks tournament scheduled for the Independence weekend has received a K5, 000 sponsor from the National Narcotics Bureau (NNB). The tournament’s theme is ‘Say No – Kick Drugs Out of PNG’ complements the bureau’s objectives and will promote awareness via signage and talks by NNB personnel.
Jamuga Stone, the tournament organiser is taking the initiative to associate martial arts with the anti drug message and thinks that the use of drugs, hard and soft, are the main cause of social problems.
In the boxing ring, the PNG team for the South Pacific Games in Noumea have received a timely boost from Paul’s Milk in the form of uniforms. Coach Joe Aufa is hoping to equal or better the 2007 games tally. Also ageless PNG boxer Jack Willie will step into the ring tonight at the Salle Omnisports Complex to fight Solomon Islander Paul Kawa in the semi finals. The winner of the bout will fight Ratu Jean-Nakaou of Vanuatu for gold.
Also Kokopo Secondary School student Tony Toliman will be making his debut against Daniel Winum of New Caledonia in the quarter finals. In the 60 KG bout, fiery Tom Boga proved too much for Rudi Kautoa of Vanuatu. The fight had to be stopped less than two minutes into the first round after a flurry of left and right hook combinations from the Papua New Guinean were unanswered. The referee ruled a technical knockout.
