Dead flies on the shelf. This would have been cleaned if the health inspector visited once a month

I have noticed (please correct me if I’m wrong) that city and health authorities only inspect an establishment when a complaint is raised. This practice, while being the norm, allows food vendors to prepare and sell in unsanitary conditions. There are many establishments in the city, operating openly in major commercial areas like Waigani and Boroko, which lack to uphold the health standards.

Now when are the responsible bodies going to take a more proactive approach rather than their reactive ways which does not seem to be much help?

Instead of always waiting for a complaint, why not go and randomly inspect establishments? I’m sure by the end of the day the message will become clear enough to vendors that they have to meet certain hygiene standards if they wish to operate.
